STAMFORD BROOK ...

© victoria hippsWhere? Stamford Brook covers the area just on the borders of Chiswick and Hammersmith. There are lovely residential streets, its very own underground on the District Line, a great selection of cafés and restaurants, useful and unusual shops, the open space of Ravenscourt Park on the doorstep and the convenience of being able to shop in Hammersmith or Chiswick.

The old, Roman road to the west ran through where Stamford Brook is today and the area still offers easy access to the M4. There is some more modern history: Lucien Pissaro lived in Stamford Brook for over forty years and many of his paintings were inspired by the views from his house across Stamford Brook Common.

His father, Camille, visited, and also painted the area. Members of the family still live at The Brook, the house set back from Stamford Brook Road, which Lucien leased. W B Yeats grew up here. 17th-century maps show evidence of the Brook, which used to flow into the moat surrounding the mansion in Ravenscourt Park, which was bombed and destroyed during World War II. Made up of three small brooks that converged east of Ravenscourt Park, Stamford Brook flowed south to The Creek in Hammersmith and into the Thames. Now the streams are all underground sewers – not nearly as romantic.
