Introduction

Welcome to our 2005/6 Primary Schools Guide
In no other city, save perhaps Manhattan, is the subject of schools so keenly thought about, discussed, worried about, and the cause of sleepless nights. The main reason for this is our divisive two tier system of education – private and state. For many parents there is no choice – either there is no option financially, there is no good state school in the vicinity or you have strong beliefs one way or another about private/state schools. But for some parents, particularly living in the more affluent parts of London, there is a choice to be made, a fundamental choice that makes us question our beliefs and ideas about what education is and what it should be about.

It can be very confusing – there are parents who work all hours to scrape private school fees together and others who could afford to go private sending their children to the local state primary by choice. If you are religious there are the Church schools to consider, traditionally providing high quality education but with rigorous admissions criteria involving church attendance.

There is so much choice it is not surprising that many new parents feel completely overwhelmed. Set out below are some of the best and most popular junior schools across London. We are restricted by space and this is not a comprehensive list. For the private schools, we have only included schools that start at 5 (ie pre-prep); we have not included prep schools beginning at 7/8.

Within the state sector, we have used the government league tables and only included those schools that scored more than 255 in the national curriculum test results for 11 year olds*. Inevitably, this means that good schools are omitted, forwhich we apologise. (Each school’s league table score and position in the borough is also listed.)
Our advice? We’ve included some pointers throughout the guide to help you on your way.

Find out as much as you can about all the schools you are interested in: check prospectuses and league tables; listen to friends’ experiences, (some) gossip and, most importantly, visit and try to find your own gut feeling about a school. Then apply, register and cross your fingers.

Abbreviations used:

IND – Independent (private)
CP– Community primary (state)
VA – voluntary aided/church schools.
F – Foundation (ex-grant maintained)
