Mission control for mums

Here is a picture of my ‘desk’. I say ‘desk’ because it’s actually my kitchen table. I do have a genuine, bone fide office, tucked away at the top of the house. And aside from the fact that it’s as messy as my kitchen (alas, the corner of the table you see is repeated through the rest of the room), it’s not really somewhere I work in very often. I prefer to be in the hub of the house, ready to spring into action to wipe a nose, race on a school run or stir a sauce (it’s amazing what you can cook up while blitzing a series of emails). As you’ve probably already gathered, I’m not the world’s most tidy person. I pretty much know where everything is, but can’t claim not to have to move mountains of teetering paper to get to it. I’m learning to work through the chaos – I now always check my diary on Sunday night, to see if there’s a school play/work deadline that I need to know about. I’m rarely without a pint of milk in the freezer to prevent me having to rush out in the rain before breakfast. And I never agree to do anything without having my diary in front of me. So having to think of all these things, plus throw the three children and the husband into the mix, is a challenge. Which is why I love my Mum’s Diary. I’d prefer the teal colour (why does so much stuff for laydeez have to be pink?), but love the week-per-page feature, a facing page for ‘Everyone Else’s Week’, the Gift Record, Need to Know Numbers, and the countless other features that help me make it through the week. It costs £14 at Mum’s Office – not a bad price for a present that will help you, friends and family have an organised 2010. The range also includes a Mum’s Weekly Calendar, FAMILY Address Book and BIG Family Diary.

  1. I’m lost without my diary. I can never understand how people can function without one – my husband did until recently, but has given in and now uses Google calendar. He keeps asking me to share his calendar online…but I’d far rather write it down on paper and carry it around with me.

  2. Melissa says:

Bugger – that reminds me that I still haven’t ordered my Organised Mum refill for next year. I keep threatening to do away with the diary and go digital by using the calendar function on my blackberry like any normal 21st person would, but then I can’t scrawl in notes about what time children need to be at the nativity play and when to bake a cake for the cake sale.

  3. Brrrrrrr chilly Mummy says:

Oh how I wish I had ordered this rather than cramming a family of four’s lives into one very chic but totally impractical diary. Oh and what is it with people who don’t have a diary but a calendar pinned up in the kitchen? You bump into them in the playgroun, try and organise a wretched playdate but you can’t as they need to go home and “check the calendar”.

  4. Heather says:

I like the pink colour! And think it’s a good step up from the post-it notes littering my handbag. Thanks for this (and ha to your desk, looks just like mine!!).

Nappyvalley – I too am lost without my diary. And I don’t know how anyone copes with a blipping BlackBerry. It’s being able to add notes and scribble stuff out that I like, plus add birthday lists and the like.

Melissa – The BlackBerry route is just too confusing and prone to error (if you’re like me – see above!).

Chilly Mum (and isn’t it just!) – I laughed at your kitchen calendar comment! So true.

Heather – I don’t hate pink, but wish that things for women weren’t always pink. And so glad I’m not the only one with a messy desk!

  6. Love this diary, I’m going to buy it as a present for myself!
