Election wipe-out
Monday, April 26th, 2010

Never let it be said that angels & urchins blog doesn’t take on some of life’s important subjects. We regularly have a little rant about such serious topics as whether to interfere when a mother is struggling with a piece of baby equipment, or to debate the merits of parents being paid a salary to work full-time in the home. We’ve even outed Lady Gaga as a school-run mum. And now that the election is nearly upon us, we’re totally there with an informed opinion.

Tick the style box with these election pointers?

Last week, CNN’s Robert Preston visited a London pub that was conducting an election poll by attaching a picture of each main party leader to three different beers. The idea was simple: the most pints sold would indicate who would next lead the party. Bakeries up and down the UK often do the same with rosette-style cakes. So weren’t we pleased to discover linen cocktail napkins, hand-embroidered in the party colour of your choice. Go green, be blue, yell for yellow or rage with red, The Monogrammed Linen Shop will reveal which lip-dabber of choice will prevail on election day.

Or will it? At £7.50 a pop, we suspect we know which colour will sell out quickest. Or is that a brash generalisation in this age of meritocracy? Not sure, but linen napkins aren’t something I willingly launder, at least not when the housekeeper and butler aren’t around…

The Monogrammed Linen Shop election napkins cost £7.50 each and are available online, or at 168-170 Walton Street, London SW3. For details, call 020 7589 4033.

Never generalise….think you might be surprised about which colour outsells the other! According to the woman who runs the shop…red and yellow have been selling best so far! Or maybe – in the spirit of fun – the clientele are using them for purposes other than dabbing lips….? I leave ‘what’ up to your imagination! Love your blog….keep up the fun topics!

Sashaho – you are absolutely right, never generalise. And I’m not going to think about alternative uses for napkins!

  3. B B says:

Certainly a lot quieter than most opinion polls!

  4. I love these!

Do they do kids’ election clothes I wonder? I would definitely dress my daughters in some kind of ‘my mummy loves Nick Clegg’ t-shirt! What are kids for if not to thrust your own opnions on?

Linen napkins. Not really part of my life, somehow. That’s what I love about blogging. It introduces you to a whole range of new things to think about.

Not-so-slummy-mummy at all! Heck, you’re right about children’s clothing. My boys are usually in stereotypical blue, but I’d hate to think that was sending out a message!

Iota – Nor mine. Though nice to dream of having someone to launder them…

  7. We’re having a dinner party on election night (because we happen to have friend in town, not because we felt the need to celebrate the less than inspirational political choices out there) and I am now very tempted to go buy these. Probably a little excessive. Still need menu suggestions that reflect the theme. Any ideas?

Home Office Mum (who is up very early this morning!) – How about coloured cocktails? You can have a tray of each colour, and if still standing, see which tray gets drunk quicker? Otherwise, start with spinach souffle, after lots of (yellow) cheese straws and the like. Main course can be very rare steak, with blueberry compote for pudding!

  9. Great Gifts says:

Having seen the leaders’ debate last night, I’m now even more undecided. Think I’ll have to buy all four colours and decide which to blow my nose on and which to use on the day.

Great Gifts – Interesting watch, wasn’t it? Brown looked so exhausted I almost felt sorry for him.

I think that Labour stood a chance up until GB made that on-air microphone gaff

  12. thanks for those ideas. So far we’ve got as far as having Eton Mess for pudding (in honour of Mr Cameron) but we’ve not got much further than that. Like your colour theme though
