Here’s to a frugal summer holiday
Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Loving this summer. The bit of rain that’s fallen over our patch of London hasn’t stopped play, the children probably won’t wear shoes again till it’s time to go back to school and nursery, and the washing machine is turning half as much as usual (there are hardly any clothes to wash when the children wear the same pair of shorts all week). I haven’t yet heard the dreaded, ‘I’m bored’ (mind you, they only finished school and nursery three days ago) and we’ve a dizzying seven weeks of nothing stretching ahead of us. And this summer, it really will be ‘nothing’. Due to the imminent arrival of baby four, we have very few plans. So letting them get on with it, aka ‘creative play’ it’s going to be. So far we’ve:

  • Made binoculars out of empty loo rolls and gone on a garden safari. It’s not exactly a large space, but we found six different kinds of spider, endless snails and picked a weed bouquet.
  • Painted over the funny faces in The Times newspaper. Nick Clegg in yesterday’s edition looks surprisingly fetching daubed green and yellow.
  • Created an obstacle course  using a laundry basket, two footballs, baseball cap and bucket. Maybe today I’ll come first in a race.
  • Baked cupcakes and iced them.
  • Picked herbs and put them in a salad (which I ate. Apparently herbs are too ‘fizzy’).
  • Splashed in a paddling pool, and buried baddie Lego men in the sand pit.

So bring on the sunshine. Not only does it deliver plenty of vitamin D, but packs in free playtime too.

Any other ideas for a fun and frugal summer?

It sounds like you have all of the ideas already. I would recommend visiting family…..especially if they live somewhere nice like Devon or Cornwall. Get your parents to look after the children, put your feet up and open a bottle of wine, oops sorry, tonic water. In fact, have a curry, get the ‘imminent one’ out and have a glass of wine….l There are some great cottage hospitals in the country too….
My old friend (who I mentioned in another post) took her small children on a Landrover safari….wouldn’t recommend that though until after you’ve popped the sprog!

Long roll of paper (ELC do them very cheaply), kids outside, paints, pens, glue, old magazines, left over bits of wool, fabric, newspaper etc….

Get the children to lie down on the paper. Draw around them to make their outline. Let them colour themselves in, stick stuff on etc to make a collage of themselves. They LOVE it! Arts and crafts, outside, no mess plus feeds their egocentric view of life.

    And cheap!

My boys also love a ‘den’. Drying rack, sheet, torches, laundry basket etc normally does it.

Also, a bath in the middle of the day. Add stupid amounts of bubbles, empty shampoo bottles etc for squirting, loads of towels on the floor…always buys me 45 mins or so.

Country Bumpkin – Love it. Free childcare and holiday rolled into one!

Spudballoo – Their very own alter ego – what a great idea. And a den outside has to be more fun for all than a den inside made out of everything (in my case, anyway) you don’t want them to play with. My poor sofa cushions have been dribbled over so many times that they look patterned, but are, in fact, plain…!

TheMadHouse – Great idea. You are such a crafty family! Really impressed with how beautifully you make things, and would urge anyone reading this to go and grab a look.
