Little Dish of the day
Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Hillary Graves, founder of Little Dish, with her two young (and healthy eating!) sons

Many of us feel we’ve a business inside us waiting to emerge. Some even make it happen. Little Dish was founded in 2006 with a mission to create healthy and tasty meals for young children. The company is currently the fastest growing kids’ fresh food company in the UK, with a projected turnover of £13million in 2012. An impressed angels & urchins blog asks its founder Hillary Graves how she did it.

Little Dish has been a huge success. What do you feel makes the company different?
One of the things that makes Little Dish different is the fact that our meals are the only fresh meals available in the supermarkets made from 100% natural ingredients and with no added salt and sugar. I think that point of difference has really helped us build trust with parents.

What was the first recipe you tested?
The first recipe was Fish Pie. We knew many parents wanted their children to eat fish but not everyone loves to cook with fish. Also we are always focused on how we can provide the best value for families, so we try to provide healthy, convenient recipes which would be slightly more complex and time consuming to make at home.

Do you have a favourite Little Dish that you’re always happy to eat?
My favourite at the moment is Chicken Risotto – it is really delicious and the perfect size for a more reasonably sized lunch or dinner for adults.

…and what about your children’s favourite
The very first favourite was Chicken & Butternut Squash Pie and it’s still a huge hit. But some recent favourites include Spaghetti & Meatballs and our new Lasagne recipe.

What are your best three tips on getting children to eat more healthily?
Don’t give up if your child rejects something the first time. Often they will eat it the second, third, sometimes fourth time they try it! Also, if you can, it’s great to sit down as a family at least once a week. The ritual of sitting together as a family is a really lovely way of encouraging healthy eating habits. And finally, children who are hungry tend to be good eaters so try not to give too many snacks in between meals.

What next for Little Dish? ‘Teenage Treats’, perhaps?
Probably not ‘Teenage’ Treats but yes, we would love to launch a Little Dish Treats range for younger kids! In the meantime we have some exciting new healthy alternatives for lunch and dinner which will be launching in September.

    I love the fish pie!

I want a Little Dish picnic in a box. Take off lid, give to kids and check Facebook.

In fact, just blend the lot together and make it into a savoury/sweet smootie.

Lucy M – I’ve been known to eat Little Dish fish pie too.

mrshev – mmmm, sounds delicious. Like a contemporary version of a pasty. But with chewing.
