Graubünden in the Southeast of Switzerland is the largest canton in Switzerland and is the highest holiday region in the Alps. Its villages and resorts are everything you would expect when you imagine a traditional Swiss region - gloriously pretty, with wood carved chalets and picturesque Alpine scenes, wooded slopes, and perfect mountain peaks. It boasts 3 languages - German, Italian and Rhaeto-Romanic all spoken (the latter unique this region).
Being Switzerland of course the train network is incredible. Most resorts are serviced directly by train from major airports and the Bernina Express, the highest railway line in the Alps, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Main ski centres: You may not have heard of the region but you have heard of some of the resorts. Davos, Klosters and St Moritz have been playing host to the fur-clad glitterati for generations.
a&u favourite Powder Byrne operate in 7 resorts in Graübunden – Flims, Laax, Lenzerheide, Arosa, Davos, Klosters & St. Moritz – and is the main UK ski company for this region.
LENZERHEIDE: Click here for details of Claire Gill's family trip to Lenzerheide.
FLIMS: The Vorab glacier of Flims delivers high skiing and snow-sure conditions throughout the season. 70% of all skiing in Flims is over 2000m and thanks to the unique topography of the valley, there are some phenomenal vistas, and great skiing through the trees. Also there is a great choice of novice ski areas both at the base station, as well as at Plaun mid station, so even later in the season the nursery slopes are still in great condition and easily reached by cable car.
Where to stay: Be one of the first to experience the all new Waldhaus Mountain Resort & Spa in Flims. Following a multi-million refurb, the new owners will be launching this iconic Belle Epoque property into the 21st Century. Imagine waking up on Christmas morning to this! It’s renowned indoor freestyle academy offers those wanting to try their hand at the jumps a great place to start in safety with foam beds and trampolines to cushion those early falls! For the less adventurous, there are plenty of calmer more relaxed runs for beginners and great cross country skiing at nearby Falera. It is a true ski in/ski out resort.
