Cars is back.
Except that this time it’s called Cars 2.
Lightning McQueen is forced out of retirement and, with his pals (cameos from Sir Michael Caine to Eddie Izzard and Owen Wilson) he enters the Grand Prix. It’s a great film, full of exciting twists and turns (literally) and -- for once -- it's really enhanced by 3d. ‘I felt like I was actually in the race,’ one five-year-old boy said afterwards.
It was great to see the cars in England. You could spot all the London landmarks and even the car personas of the Queen and Prince William make an appearance. Lightning McQueen gets himself involved in the traditional fight against evil and at one point he’s tied to the clock mechanism of Big Ben while the ticking of every second brings him closer to a rusty end.
The plot gets a little lost in the middle, but a resounding thumbs up all round from the kids.
