Spring is in the air and so is hay fever – runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, even eczema and asthma. It is caused by an allergic reaction to pollens; and people react differently to different pollens. Traditionally, antihistamines are prescribed to suppress symptoms and some can be very effective without causing drowsiness. Alternative medicine tries to manage the symptoms without antihistamines.
Homeopath Amanda Rubin explains that the idea is to stimulate the body into a “better state of balance” and build up the immune system so it does not overrespond to allergens. Ideally a patient is treated by a homeopath during winter to reduce the severity each spring. If it isn’t possible to see a homeopath, you can try Euphrasia, Allium cepa, Sabadilla officinarum (All three are combined in Nelsons Pollenna.) and Ainsworths, the homeopathic pharmacy has a Mixed Pollen as well as specific pollen remedies.
Herbalist Rachel Boardman suggests elderflower tea to be taken for a month or two before the hay fever season starts. Chamomile compresses soothe itchy eyes. Avoid foods that produce mucus – sugar/salt/wheat/processed food/dairy – it is a long list but worth trying.
