You don’t need an excuse to go for Sunday brunch buffet at the Blue Elephant but it happened to be a friend’s 40th birthday. We were a table of four adults and seven children and it couldn’t have been more relaxing and fun.

When we finally got to our table, after the kids had been wowed by the giant goldfish and gold everywhere, we kicked off with Singa beers for the adults and pineapple juices complete with orchid decoration for the children. We then helped ourselves in the ‘starter’ area: delicious tom yam soup, satay chicken (very popular) and dim sum. The kids began rather tentatively with minute portions but were soon going back for more.

Among the main course was the best green curry I had ever had as well as plainer options for kids. The puddings were incredible with fruit I had never seen before, including pink water chestnuts; they all tried black jelly and exquisite rice and custard tartlets. The kids, not surprisingly, want to go back next weekend.

Sunday brunch (noon–3.30pm) £22 adult; £11 children
