What we will be dipping into this Summer

What to choose to take in your hand-luggage? It is a real question that could well make or break your summer. We have a shortlist for you to choose from.

how_to_be_a_woman_187.How to be a Woman. by Caitlin Moran

Ebury Press

This book is really the talk of the town and it seems to tick all the boxes for women everywhere. Read it and decide for yourselves.

the_tigers_wife_193. The Tigers Wife by Tea Obreht

Phoenix Press.

Winner of the Orange Prize 2011 the book comes with quite alot of hype from the US, but it more than lives up to it. Based in Yugoslavia this weaves myth and mystery to create an unputdownable tale for our times.

smut_159.Smut – Alan Bennett (an afternoon of fun by the pool)

Wonderful, eccentric, sexy. 2 short stories in true Alan Bennett style. Tender, very funny and just a perfect way to wile away an afternoon by the pool.

the_strangers_child_190 The Stranger’s Child by Alan Hollinghurst

Picador

An epic story of two families and two houses spanning the entire 20th century, enhances its author's claim to the title of best British novelist working at the moment. It will keep you gripped all through the holidays

the_help_160.The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Penguin

I simply couldn't put this down. If you like Gone With the Wind, if you like a darn good read, this one's for you. I loved it.

22_britannia_road_185.22 Brittania Road – Amanda Hodgkinson

Fig Tree

A beautifully written story about Polish immigration. A feel of Rose Tremain's The Road Home. Brilliant.

state_of_wonder_167.State of Wonder - Anne Patchett

Bloomsbury

Set in the Brazilian Rain Forest this is a wonderful book that will take you on a marvellous adventure. If you struggle to begin with, keep going, because it is worth it. Fantastic setting, fascinating characters that stay with you for a long time.

a_visit_from_the_goon_squad_174.A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan.

Corsair

This is a big novel about American lives and it packs a big punch. Beautifully written, funny, edgy, read it.

battle_hymn_of_the_tiger_mother_160.The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chau Bloomsbury

This book focuses on the dramatic differences between the Eastern and Western approaches to parenting. No play-dates,no sleep-overs. Maths Whizz clubs and extra violin for Chau's children. Read it and gasp.

the_good_book_182.

The Good Book: A secular bible by A C Grayling.

This is a wonderful book for the modern age, to dip into and find wisdom and courage in whatever challenge you face. The book is made up of thousands of texts by authors, philosophers and orators spanning many centuries. There is something for everyone – a great anecdote to the stress of life.

Lucky Break by Esther Freud

Bloomsbury

The dialogue is totally engaging in this warm and funny book about a group of young actors grappling with the challenges of that topsy turvy world.

Parisian Chic: A Style Guide by Ines de la Fressange

Flammarion

Ines de la Fressange is Paris's answer to Kate Moss, effortlessly putting clothes together with such style. Here she imparts her beauty tips, favourite shopping haunts (many of them online and ship to the UK) and her strict fashion dos and don'ts. For an aspiring boho like me, these rules are quite an ask but I can appreciate that the end result looks fantastic.

Don’t read Monica Ali's An Untold Story, I am afraid it is just shockingly bad.

Have fun and happy reading.
