The Imperial War Museum, re-opened in 2014 after a £40million re-vamp, it is fabulous. It combines the personal and the symbolic to brilliant effect. The Norman Foster-designed atrium, sunk into the basement and up four stories with heavy steel clad staircases and iconic images of war - fighter jets, rockets, a boat from Dunkirk - coming at you from all angles is incredibly powerful.

The new WW1 galleries are thoughtful and intimate, repaying hours of wandering, gradually building up a rounded picture of this hideous conflict and Britain’s place in it through intimate direct accounts. A word of warning though, if you visited with kids before the closure the ‘trench experience’ is no more. It’s replacement, with a smaller, more stylised version does not quite pack the same punch.

Children can get a huge amount out of this wonderful resource but they need to engage their imaginations more in the process. Maybe that is no bad thing. There are new family trolleys to guide family visits and lots of interactive elements, plus an excellent Peyton & Byrne café for restorative cakes.
