Two crafty robbers, one tiny ladybird, and a whole farmyard of fun! Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len have a cunning plan to steal the farmer’s fine prize cow. But they reckon without the tiniest, quietest creature of all: The Ladybird has a plan of her own! Join the woolly sheep, the hairy hog, the fat red hen and the dainty dog in this brand new stage adaptation of Julia Donaldson & Lydia Monks’ colourful farmyard adventure. With live music, puppetry, plenty of audience participation and lots of laughs! A glittering treat for all the family.

a&u review: What the Ladybird Heard

The illustrator of the popular picture book, Lydia Monks, collaborated closely with this stage adaptation and the results are brilliant. The realisation of her bold line drawings will not disappoint young readers with firm ideas of what the characters look like. The four strong cast (one recruited from the 'audience') are fantastic and the songs that knit the story together are foot tapping and catchy with repeat choruses perfect for little ones. The number when they create the farmyard animals - a wheelbarrow and a sheepskin into a woolly sheep, a broom into a dainty dog, a red gardening glove into a fat red hen and, the piece de resistance, a bicycle, water trough and bucket into a horse - is inspired.

The baddies, Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len, are a comic joy but with just enough menace to have younger audience members holding their breath; and the farmyard mixup engineered by the clever ladybird is a brilliant denouement.

It is fun without being raucous, the pace cleverly managed (the ladybird has to be called q u i e t l y, with a flute) and everyone leaves the theatre with a sunny, feelgood vibe.

The perfect introduction to theatre but also a hugely enjoyable hour for mums, dads and grandparents. GO.
