A Christmas Carol

Christmas Carol

Walk into the Old Vic and walk back in time. In the round, linked to the back of the stalls by a 'runway', it is peopled with carol singers, mince pie sellers (have one, they are delicious) and baskets of tangerines. A stark set of empty door frames surround the circle with a network of hanging lamps - it is gloriously evocative.

Rhys Ifans is born to play Scrooge. A mean misery-guts, he dispatches the carol singers who come calling and locks up his money in thudding safes under the ground. He spits (quite literally, beware seats near the front) and grumbles and bah humbugs himself into bed. The arrival of his erstwhile partner slithering up through the audience dragging his hellish chains behind him has something of Pirates of the Caribbean to it and he leaves Scrooge waiting for the witching hour with a touch of trepidation but a full on scary ghost story this is not. It is recommended for 11+ but I think plucky 9 year olds would enjoy it.

The ghost of Christmas Past is pushing a pram and we are taken back to see the young Ebenezer with his life ahead of him. Abusive father, beloved sister, young sweetheart, ambitious dreams of a  life of riches. The cast is uniformly excellent and the action is interspersed with carols and gloriously atmospheric silver bells. As the hard hearted Scrooge melts in the second Act, the Christmas tempo ramps up - he embraces Christmas in a manic frenzy, brussel sprouts parachute down and we are soaked in snow. My junior reviewer was on his feet at the end. A joyous, life-affirming Christmas treat. Go!

A Christmas Carol runs at the Old Vic from 20 Nov–20 Jan.
