From Selfie to Self-Expression
Celebrity photo-bombs, self-portraits, sculpture and performance art - you will find it all at the Saatchi Gallery's latest opening. I took along junior reporter Jessie (age 11) and she was mad about it.
The new exhibition explores the history of the selfie from Velazquez to the present day, whilst celebrating the truly creative potential of a form of expression often derided for its inanity. Showing alongside examples of many influential artists' work are selfies that have quickly become icons of the digital era – from the beautiful and sublime to the mad, bad and downright dangerous.
Kids will love the fascinating Pom Pom Mirror controlled by a motion sensor that reflects your image in faux fur white and black pom poms, so clever! Strike any pose and the mirror will reflect straight back at you.
Also head to the Zoom Pavilion where projectors, infrared cameras and robotic zoom cameras capture your image and anyone else standing next you onto the gallery walls. The room is carpeted so Jessie loved doing cartwheels across the room while watching her image alongside her.
A really great show for kids of all ages.
