Rachel Whiteread

Oldies among us will remember the East London condemned 'House' that Whiteread filled with concrete in the year she became the first woman to win the Turner Prize. Standing alone in a bombed terrace in Bow, it was duly demolished by the Council after just 80 days in situ.

Monumental, solid, tactile, Whiteread's work is immediately accessible making this a great Autumn show for kids. Experts in sandcastle creation will instantly relate to the inside out shapes and detail of ordinary household objects - chairs, tables, beds, doors - rendered in plaster, glass, rubber and resin. Find the plug sockets on the bottom of Room 101 (the room in Broadcasting House apparently the inspiration for Orwell), consider how the materials she chooses make you respond differently to a series of 'torsos' (hot water bottles) and don't miss the newly commissioned Chickenshed in the garden outside. If you had a house shaped beach bucket, this is what you would make!

The gallery walls have come down allowing the objects space just to be. Sadly you can't touch them and don't miss a look at the photographs of her permanent pieces across the globe. Sculpture like this is best in context, whether that is a busy London street, an Arizona desert or Trafalgar Square. As a grown up, I wished there had been a bit more explanation of the story behind each piece but kids will enjoy responding directly to them without a context.

Go!
