The EY Exhibition: Impressionists in London

Monet

This show bills itself as an exploration of how London inspired a group of leading Impressionists (including Monet, Pissarro and Tissot) when they took refuge here after the Franco-Prussian War in the 1870s.

The first room is an interesting history lesson. There are some gruelling depictions of the atrocities witnessed first hand in Paris that will appeal to older children or les Mis fans (albeit forty years later). However, the exhibition slightly loses its way once they arrive on British shores. A bit of a hotchpotch of random, vaguely 'English' paintings and a room of sculptures (with one wonderful Rodin head at the end).

Persevere however. It is worth it for the last two rooms. The penultimate gallery puts London centre stage. Entitled Through Outsiders' Eyes: British Sports, Crowds and Parks, easily recognisable to London children will be Sisley's bridge at Hampton Court, Pissarro's Kew Green, de Nittis' Piccadilly, Monet's Hyde Park.

Hampton Court  Piccadilly  Monet Hyde Park

This leads into a room (painted later) of Monet's 'Thames Series' - six paintings of the Houses of Parliament. They may have graced a thousand chocolate boxes but they remain breathtaking and have a wow factor that will enchant adults and children alike.

On the way out there is a 'coda' to the exhibition with a series of paintings by Andre Derain inspired by Monet. Full of colour and vibrancy, they are a good talking point for different ways of approaching the same subject and may even inspire some junior attempts. Westminster Bridge is only just round the corner!
