Imagine a life before the internet, before Facebook and instagram, a time when the only way to communicate was via the written letter. The postal service changed the way we lived our lives. A revolutionary service, the Royal Mail was for everyone.

Discover for yourself the extraordinary story of the post office at this brand new museum. We were lucky enough to visit in summer 2016 to get a first glimpse of what the museum holds. We were taken way beneath the ground to see the Mail Rail. Who knew that beneath London are hundreds of low tunnels - used for ferrying letters around the city by train. During the war this was vital for keeping information flowing, hidden from view.

At the new museum kids will get to ride on the Mail Rail and see for themselves the elaborate system that kept London in communication for over 75 years. The miniature passenger train is a bit like a mini open-air tube train, and you’ll be able to take a 15-minute journey through the original tunnels and station platforms under Mount Pleasant in central London.

Sorted

The new museum will feature a dedicated play space for ages 0–8. Play-act as a postal worker or explore the miniature town. Have a go at collecting, sorting and delivering letters and parcels of all shapes and sizes.
