Millions of people visit the O2 every year but only a crazy brave few dare to climb over the top of it!

Our expedition began at Base Camp where, after watching a rather humorous safety video , we were kitted out in very snazzy blue jumpsuits, climbing boots and a very solid safety harness. All belongings are left behind in lockers but there is a special pocket in your climb suit for your mobile/camera.

Once suited and booted you make your way via a short set of stairs to the base of the tent. Smile for the camera then begin your ascent up a rather bouncy surface at an alarmingly steep 30% angle, a bit like scrambling up a very steep trampoline!

As we scaled the walkway our excellent tour guide, Chaz, pointed out all the London sites, we stopped half way for a look around before we continued the climb. The only minor downside was that it was a bit tricky for Amelie (10 yrs) to pass her climb latch through all 80 separate brackets along the safety cable but our guide was very helpful and patient and offered to do several of them for her.

When we reached the top of the dome we were un-harnessed and let loose to wander around the observation platform. The 360-degree views from the top were wonderful. We took our obligatory pics then started our descent down the other side to North camp. The whole process ran like clockwork – a little mini van even brings your belongings to you at the other end named North Camp.  It was all very slick and felt very safe , even in the not so friendly winter conditions.

‘Epic, awesome and windy’ replied Amelie when asked what she thought of the climb. ‘When can we do it again ? ’

The walkway is suspended 52 metres above ground level and is 320 feet long.
