Opera - Passion, Power and Politics

The key to enjoyment of this fantastic show in the new Sainsbury Gallery at the V&A is the pair of headphones that you MUST pick up on the way in.

Then walk through seven different cities, from the masked courtesans of 17th century Venice where it all began to post-revolution Russia. For each city there is a focus on a particular opera and, as you look at the sets, costumes, instruments for each one the music fills your ears - Queen Ann's London is Handel's Rinaldo; turn of the century Vienna the Marriage of Figaro; Verdi in Milan in 1842, Wagner in Paris in 1861. You may need to put your hands over younger eyes as you confront Richard Strauss' Salome kissing John the Baptist's severed head but apart from that, it really is a show for the whole family. If anything is going to show that opera is not just about £200 tickets to Covent Garden it is this!
