For this year's 10th Unilever installation at the Turbine Hall you are confronted with the gigantic empty blackness of an enormous steel shipping container on legs, How It Is, by Miroslaw Balka.
You walk up the ramp which somehow is unnerving in itself, and when you enter, the blackness is so profound that you have to walk with your arms in front of you, like Scooby Doo. The walls, strangely, are lined with felt, so there is blackness and silence, and a complete sense of disorientation until a huge slice of light at the end provides relief. It is surprisingly not frightening. Young children may take a while to go into the blackness and definitely need to hold tightly onto hands if they manage it, but somehow even to run around between the huge steel legs of the container feels inspiring.
