David Hockney RA: A Bigger Picture 21 Jan - 9 April.
The latest arty blockbuster rolls into town at Burlington House. If you have been efficient enough to book tickets in advance, you can feel proudly smug as there could hardly be a better way to brighten up a miserable January day.
Huge colour-saturated canvases of Hockney's beloved Yorkshire countryside adorn wall after wall of the Royal Academy. Children will love the instant emotional pull of the bright landscapes painted from memory and see the differences between the studies painted from life. The rooms devoted to studies of the same natural scene (a la Monet waterlillies) should also appeal to kids - 'which one do you like best?' 'which one do you think he painted in spring/summer/autumn' etc.
The largest room is devoted to a series of paintings done on his i-pad. The flat bold colours work brilliantly and the 'painting' app will surely become an instant bestseller.
Don't miss the film room. Mainly given over to seasonal and then windy landscapes, there are two depicting ballet dancers at play in Hockney's studios. Stephen McRae's tap dancing feet are especially memorable.
You will come out with a spring in your step and your head full of colour. Book NOW!
