Get ready for the start of something new! The stage production based on the Disney Channel Original Movie HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL is now live in London with a strictly limited run at the Hammersmith Apollo.
Our Verdict
We sent three over-excited 6 to 9 year olds and their, very sceptical, aunt (who had not seen the film) to see the phenomenon that is taking place atthe Hammersmith Apollo."Brilliant", "fantastic", "awesome" was the verdict from the under 10s - their only criticism that "Troy and Gabriella don't look anything like that". Aunt Jill was, perhaps more surprisingly, also won over. Ear-splittingly loud and cliché ridden, yes, but well choreographed and slickly put together. Choruses were drowned out by poor accoustics (and 3000 screaming kids), but the leads more than held their own; the energy was infectious; and the genuine spark between Troy and Gabriella meant the schmaltzy finale was smile-inducing. High art this is not, great fun it is.
Best for ages 6+. Evening performance didn't finish until nearly 10pm.
