Dick Whittington
27 Nov–8 Jan. Tickets: £10–£25 adults, £10 children, £50 family.
"Once again, the team at Hammersmith has come up with a panto that will both please traditionalists while feeling fresh and contemporary. Entirely free of the sponsorship that is creeping into too many London pantos, it is also distinguished by the excellent quality of its chorus line.
Set firmly in London, W6, it tells the tale of country boy Dick from Gloucestercestershire who heads to the big smoke to seek fame and fortune. Assisted by a cool Jamaican feline, he falls for Alice, the baker's daughter and together they defeat the dastardly King Rat to bring safety and prosperity to the streets of London.
The story rather loses its way in the second act with a slightly unnecessary trip to the tropical island of Timbuk3, but narrative is only ever a bit part of panto and in the main event, this production is a glorious success. Alice is a fiesty heroine with a show stopping voice; Dick is charmingly inept; Susan the Cook a fabulous dame; King Rat suitably dastardly.
Great, singalong family fun."
