Interview: Heidi Gosman and Penny Klein

Annie and Emily chat to Heidi Gosman (right) and Penny Klein (left), the team behind the fabulous Heidi Klein beachwear range. Heidi and Penny opened their first boutique in 2002 and launched their own-brand swimwear label two years later. Over a decade on, the DNA remains the same: they make what their clients want to wear - classic, well cut, flattering swimwear and now accessories and a children's line too. The pair have five kids between them so, like Annie and Emily, juggle motherhood with running a business. Back in cold grey London from a recce in St Lucia, their job has undeniable perks, making them well-qualified to chat about international travel.

Top business tips? Don't try and do too much. Be the best at what you do before you move on to the next challenge. Recognise your weaknesses as well as your strengths and make sure the team around you is better than you.

Best business decision? To work together.

How do you manage the mum/work juggle? When you are there, be there. Sometimes it's a challenge–we both live out of London now and basically have no social life. We are so lucky to have been running our own business while bringing up the kids, and to be two women in the same boat.

Best/worst family holiday? Penny: N. Wales, both best and worst. When it rains .....

Heidi: You can't beat skiing as a family holiday.

Best airline for travelling with kids? Virgin (both). The salt and peppers are a great distractor (Heidi).

On your wish list to visit? Penny: I am really looking forward to taking the kids on safari.

Heidi: We shot our kids' swimwear range at Little Dix Bay in the BVI. I would love to take my children there.

Best place without the kids? Penny: Santa Caterina on the Amalfi coast.

Heidi: St Lucia's not bad.

Both: St Tropez is always fun.

Favourite world city? Penny: London.

Heidi: Rome.

Best meal ever? Penny: I had an amazing meal at The Palomar in Soho the other day.

Heidi: There are fantastic mountain restaurants in the Italian ski resort of Champoluc.

What swimwear trends do you see? In swimwear, women will always opt for what suits them which is why fit is essential. (HK fitters are specially trained and Penny and Heidi run fitting training worldwide.) The support, lift and control that modern swimwear fabric can give is fantastic.

Heidi: Certain looks will never go out of fashion:white/black/nautical/animal prints. Pastels and florals are still big.

Favourite suncare range? Sisley or St Barth's.

Fake tan? Yes, definitely! We have a spray tan booth in the shop.

What is this season's must-have accessory? A straw basket, a sarong and a bandana.

Flip flops or sandals? It depends ... both!

What colour should be we painting our toes this summer? Any, so long as it's pastel.

Favourite beach cocktail? A Rum Goddess.

Desert island disc? Penny: Hunky Dory David Bowie.

Heidi: Anything by Bob Marley.
