Serious skippers and crews will have a blast playing in the strong winds of the Bonafacio Straits between northern Sardinia and Corsica. We were less intrepid. We chartered a 43ft cruising yacht from Nautilus Yachting. Although we were sailing bareboat, we were given a full briefing and suggested itinerary on arrival at the snazzy Marina di Portisco, in the heart of the Costa Smerelda.
Nervous of the unpredictability of the winds, we only went north for a couple of days. We had a memorable lunch of spaghetti vongole on the Island of Caprera, home to Garibaldi (one of my heroes) and peeped our nose over the famous straits. With the breeze behind us, we then headed back down the East side of the island. The winds were gentle, the coastline untouched and white beaches and clear water for which Sardinia is famous exceeded all expectations. Bliss.
A 3-birth yacht charter from Portisco costs from £1,800 during the summer nautilusyachting.com
