Challenges at school
For students who are struggling, the start of the Spring Term can often be as stressful as the start of the school year. Maybe they’ve had difficulty keeping up with the curriculum and received in-school help. The love of learning may have disappeared and been replaced with feelings of grit and determination: “We just have to make it until the Summer Holiday.” When the Spring Term begins parents often search for additional support.
Why do they struggle?
Students who are learning easily are global, independent readers and thinkers. Reading requires the imagery-language foundation, an integration of processing skills: word attack, sight word recognition, paragraph reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Students who aren’t performing to potential in reading, or slow readers, may have weak symbol imagery – the ability to visualise letters in words. Students struggling to follow directions or comprehend classwork and homework may have weak concept imagery – the ability to create an imagined gestalt (whole) from language. These difficulties are not only frustrating for students, but also prevent them from accessing school curriculum.
How Lindamood-Bell can help
At Lindamood-Bell, we believe that all students can be taught to read and comprehend to their potential. Our unique, evidence-based instruction helps students develop the imagery-language foundation necessary to read, comprehend and experience success in school.
Traditional tutoring programmes may work on homework once a week over the course of several terms or even years. Because of this, our typical recommendations for daily instruction to change learning may be a new concept. In a matter of weeks, our instruction can result in extraordinary gains in reading, comprehension and maths. Skills can improve quickly and help make a huge difference.
The first step is to determine what may be affecting your child’s performance in the classroom. At our learning centres, we identify strengths and weaknesses that may be affecting school performance in reading, comprehension and maths. Our instruction is based on an individual’s learning needs. Daily instruction can happen in our learning centre or online, after school or as part of a child’s school day.
Get started for free with a complimentary Diagnostic Screening for Learning. This free screening takes 20-30 minutes, measures your student’s reading and comprehension skills and includes a consultation. The information you’ll receive can help answer questions about school performance, behaviour, frustrations, homework issues and expectations.
