Summer by the Seaside

Looking ahead to summer? OK, we are unlikely to get another one like last year, but if you have got little ones in tow nothing quite beats the ease of packing up the car and driving to your destination. Our coastline is a stunning as anywhere in the world and all of these options - from lighthouses to glamping - are either on, or walkable to the sea. They all still have availability for the summer holidays and are suitable for families (and some are even dog-friendly too!) 

Cornwall, Perranporth Beach

You can't get much closer to the beach than this! The Penthouse appartment sits overlooking Perranporth Beach, which was named one of England's best beaches in 2018. Fans of Poldark will love the fact that Perranporth was home to the author, Winston Graham. Comes equipped with cot and highchair. A three-night stay starts from £1,154, and a week costs from £1,533 for up to six guests


Sunderland, Souter Lighthouse

You can count on the National Trust for a historic cottage in an amazing setting and you can't get more dramatic than this. Set on the rugged cliff tops, the Light Keepers cottages are next door to the Souter Lighthouse. Both cottages have gardens with sea views. Hampshire, Calshot Beach

Staying in a beach hut, right on the beach, is surely the thing childhood dreams are made of? The beach will be yours once the day-trippers have gone...These solar-powered huts are uber stylish, beautifully equipped with a modern kitchen, bathroom and wood-burning stove. Sleeps up to five people from £830 weekend/mid-week and £1,550 for a week in the summer 

Northumberland, Cheswick Beach

Stay in this Grade II listed Georgian house which is just a short stroll to the golden sands of Cheswick. Plenty of space for the children to run wild and the perfect location to explore the wide open beaches of Northumberland all the way down to Holy island. Scottish Highlands, Ullapool

Surrounded by water on three sides this cottage has to be set in one of the most spectacular settings in Scotland. Spend days exploring sandy beaches and rock pools, fishing, and kayaking and evenings toasting marshmallows and looking for shooting stars. Blissful. Sleeps 8 £1,040 for a week in the summer
