The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Step through the wardrobe this winter into the magical kingdom of Narnia for the most mystical of adventures in a faraway land. Join Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter as they wave goodbye to wartime Britain and say hello to a talking Faun, an unforgettable Lion and the coldest, cruellest White Witch.

a&u review

Director Sally Cookson is famous for taking audiences on journeys using imaginations rather than special effects and this is no exception.

The first half in particular is fabulous. From the moment we are issued with our ration cards - ready to join the train to whisk us and the countless other children to the safety of the country, away from the bombs - we are 'with' the four Pevensie siblings in their displaced, bewildering new environment.

The door to Narnia is a simple frame and as the children tumble through it, the frozen world they enter is brilliantly created using swirls of white sheeting that envelop the stage from the aisles. The woodland creatures provide welcome comedy with their Home Guard resistance movement but make no mistake this is a scary, icy world - Laura Elphinstone is a magnificent White Witch, seducing the fragile, traumatised Edmund with enormous Turkish delights and rising up (quite literally) to summon all her evil powers to invoke eternal winter. Maugrim her wolf sidekick oozes murderous malevolence.

The (shorter) second act is very different in tone. Aslan is on the move. Spring is coming. Although there is real darkness to the 'sacrifice' that is made to spare Edmund, the overriding feeling is one of carnival - dare I say it almost of pantomime. The stage fills with a multitude of colours as flowers are passed over the heads of the audience. Good triumphs. The world is reborn. The children learn what it is to rule. The future is theirs.
