Everything about this show, the opening production in the new theatre in the Jerwood Gallery, makes us want to recommend it. And we are, with some reservations.

It is brilliant idea. The young Charles, just down from Cambridge, is looking for his role in life. He leaves his comfortable home for five years on the high seas on HMS Beagle finding specimens of rocks, fossils, skeletons and animals, gradually developing a thesis that will change our understanding of the world we live in for ever.

The staging is simple and effective. The back wall is a screen onto which maps of his travels are projected, together with glorious images of the night sky, creating a sense of our place within the universe. The Christian story of creation and how Darwin's discoveries would inevitably undermine the teaching of the church are well handled and the story is a very human one.

A range of hand-held puppets are used to bring the animals Darwin finds to life, some of which work better than others, but older children will enjoy them. It is overlong (2 hours 15 mins) and the young cast do not quite have the presence to hold the dramatic pace.

The ticket prices are steep but keen naturalists of 11+ will learn an enormous amount about this great scientist's life. And then you can go and explore the treasures of the NHM collection with new vigour!
