Tutankhamun: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh

We arrived at the Saatchi Gallery in a state of huge excitement bursting to see King Tut's 'dazzling artefacts'. On arrival you are ushered into a huge room where a vast widescreen cinema whizzes you back to the Valley of the Kings recapping the story of this once-forgotten boy king and the huge excitement that captivated the world when Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon broke through the stone walls in 1922 and discovered his epic tomb treasure trove. It's pretty spine tingling stuff! From here you are then let loose to explore the jam-packed 6 exhibition galleries.

There is no denying that the condition of the artefacts on show is astonishing considering they are well over 3,000 years old, dating back to King Tut's death in 1326 B.C. From the preparation for his journey to the underworld to a recreated Burial Chamber, a gilt inlaid Solar Boat that would transport the king to his afterlife to a stunning Wishing Cup your brain will be buzzing. We wondered around the exhibition for 90 mins but could have stayed at least an hour more. Take the kids on a hunt for our favourite treasures below;-

Miniature Canopic Coffin Used to store King Tut's liver!

Tutankhamun on the back of a panther

King Tut's Bed

Wooden Guardian Statue of the King

King Tut's Ceremonial Shield

Colossal Quartzite Statue

We have to be honest though and admit that we were a little disappointed that the treasures on display were all rather small. Over 5,400 items were recovered from Tutankhamun's tomb and although this is the largest collection to ever leave Egypt (you will see over 150) some of them are really very small. The Colossal Quartzite Statue of Tutankhamun is hugely striking and has a room all to himself (he is very large)! but all the other artefacts, although perfectly formed and beautifully preserved, are all rather little. We can't fault the staging of the exhibition though. The timeline for the discovery of the tomb is historically fascinating, the info explaining the curse will grip kids and they'll love the photos of his mummified body and the interactive skelton examination table.

There is however the ticket price to consider - it's pretty steep. The virtual reality tomb tour is awesome and a must but this comes at an additional cost too. A peak ticket for a family of 4 will set you back £96 with the virtual reality tour on top (£15.50 per ticket). As for the merchandising - we have never seen anything quite like it. Two whole rooms to entice parents to spend those £££'s.

We did love the exhibition and would very much recommend going, we do feel however it's a great shame it's so expensive. It's a fascinating history lesson and really does bring to life the story of this lost golden pharaoh.

Oh ! Just so you aren't disappointed his famous Funerary Mask is tucked up safely in it's Egyptian home inside the Museum in Cairo and will eventually go on view with the entire Tutankhamun collection at the forthcoming Grand Egyptian Museum. Sounds like it's going to be pretty spectacular.
