Serpentine Pavilion Frida Escobedo

Mexican architect Frida Escobedo is the youngest artist to take on the temporary structure that has become a feature of summer in Kensington Gardens over the last 18 years.

First impressions as you approach the Pavilion are of an enclosed box, dark against the verdant green of the park. But as you get closer you see it is made of a mesh of concrete roof tiles, with gaps between each - perfect for little eyes to enjoy peeping through.

Escobedo's courtyard-based design draws on both the domestic architecture of Mexico and British materials and history, specifically the Prime Meridian line at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.

The juxtaposition works well. You certainly get a sense of being in a domestic internal courtyard (a common feature of Mexican architecture) but something funny is going on with the angles that makes you feel a bit disorientated. The outer walls are in a line with the Serpentine Gallery’s eastern façade but the axis of the internal courtyard is pivoted and goes directly north, a reference to the Prime Meridian, the global standard marker of time and geographical distance.

The curved underside of the canopy roof is mirrored and there is a thin triangular pool of water cast into the floor at one corner, the edge of which runs along the edge of the roof, along the north axis of the Meridian. The reflection of the sun in the water bounces off the roof creating reflections that change throughout the day.

It is subtle, fun and definitely worth dropping in on. Click here for more details.
