Steve McQueen

Using his own school photo (taken when he was in Year 3 at Ealing Primary in 1977) as a starting point, he has had teams out and about taking pictures of 1,504 of London’s primary schools with Year 3 pupils over the last year. And the results cover the walls of the Tate's Duveen galleries - floor to ceiling, 3,128 of them. State, Independent, Faith and Special schools are all represented, together with Pupil Referral Units and home educated children.

They look directly at you - serious, laughing, cheeky, shy - two-thirds of the city’s entire population of seven-to-eight-year olds. It's quite a display. Child protection regs mean staff cannot tell you where a particular school is. If you had a child in Year 3 last year, chances are they will be going on a school trip to see themselves - top row classes will need to make use of the giant magnifying glass. Participating schools have been given photo locations by Tate so contact your school before going - you will be hard pushed to find yourself without knowing where to look.

In addition, you can't have missed the 613 Year 3 billboards that have been popping up at roadsides, railways and tube stations over the last couple of weeks. Organised by Artangel, renowned for producing art in unexpected places, the extended display will span all of London’s 33 boroughs from 4 to 18 November 2019. The future is theirs!

To 3 May, 2020. Free.

Thames Clippers are also offering free travel to kids going to the exhibition.
