One, Two, Three, Swing!

      Turbine Hall Pendulum

Walk down the sloped, carpeted entrance of the Tate Modern's Turbine Hall and there is a giant pendulum swinging above you.

Once the ground flattens (although throughout it remains unexpectedly not quite flat - beware!) the space is filled with a criss cross of orange and grey rectangular tubes from which, at intervals, are suspended three-person swings. Proper, get some momentum up, swings.

Turbine Hall Hyundai Commission swings

Each swing has been designed for three people by Danish artists’ collective SUPERFLEX. We are told that "swinging with two other people has greater potential than swinging alone and One Two Three Swing! invites us to realise this potential together. Swinging as three, our collective energy resists gravity and challenges the laws of nature."

Art? I'm not sure - but it is great fun and the two children who gamefully agreed to be the first kids to try it out both gave it a big thumbs up. Up there with the slides as the most child-friendly Turbine Hall installation yet!
