Where

The Science Museum

Exhibition Road, South Kensington, London

For budding astronauts, the ‘Exploring Space’ gallery at the science museum is hard to beat. With ‘floating’ planets, astro-suits and a life size replica of an Apollo 11, the exhibit never fails to spark new interest for kids of all ages.

Be sure to check out the real piece of moon rock on the right as you walk through to the next gallery; it’s an amazing artefact that’s easy to miss.

For the under-fives who may be getting tired of such intense space adventures this floor also homes a captivating sensory area in the ‘Pattern Pod' or head down to ‘The Garden’ in the basement where little ones can play their way through water, light, sound and constructions before you pop into the basement café for a snack.

The next gallery from ‘Exploring Space’ is ‘Making the Modern World’ where the journey through space continues with Apollo 10 which is situated next to an ‘explainer station’ manned by helpful and engaging staff to talk you through its journey.

This gallery is perfect for kids interested in transport…

but also covers a large range of innovations which may interest older children, either from a historical or scientific point of view, with displays based on any inventions or discoveries made between the outbreak of the second world war and the Vietnam War ranging from the first double helical DNA model and early periodic tables...

…to the period’s most influential records.

Kids of 10+ may want to continue onto the temporary exhibit ending in October 2020, ‘Driverless: Who is in control?’ Be sure to check out the ‘Moral Machine’ where they can determine how they’d programme a driverless car- ‘do you programme the car to save the passengers or the pedestrian?’- for example.

More on transport can be found on the third floor, the ‘Engineer Your Future’ interactive gallery offers you the opportunity to design your own Mars rover; whilst the flight Gallery houses more aircraft than one could think possible to fit under one roof- a must see for any young flying enthusiast.

At this juncture, making it up to the third floor might be rewarded with an exciting treat at the ‘Shake Bar’!

When heading back down be sure to stop on the first floor at one the museum’s most interesting and engaging exhibits in the ‘Who am I?’ interactive gallery. This room features games specifically designed for young children such as recognising the emotions attached to facial expressions, as well as screens, also entertaining for older kids, where they can practice their memory of facial featuresor learn how their brain works through tracing the art of distraction in magic tricks and much more!

If you find yourself in need of lunch before heading out try ‘The Diner’, this sit- down restaurant serves classic dishes to please the whole family.
