The Wallace Collection's armoury is a phenomenon so it is appropriate that the museum's first ticketed exhibition should draw on these iconic metal masks.

The first room contains a series of visors - from Ancient Greece, 15th century Europe and WW1 (in which Henry Moore served). The similarity of the basic structure across the millennia is marked and the spark that ignited the young Moore, who loved visiting this jewel of a museum while studying in London, is easy to see.

Children will respond to the intricate structures within the exterior shells - early works with string are a bit like puzzles. A helmet protecting a face, a mother protecting a child.

Sadly the armour dressing up that used to be next door has ceased - it was simply too good and grown ups got up to high jinks. However, there are Armour Handling Sessions between 11am and 3pm on Saturdays.

There is no charge for Under 18s to the Moore show (hurrah, not just U16s or U12s) so if you fancy dipping into what is essentially a scholarly examination while visiting one of our very best FREE collections, do take your kids at a weekend. And see below for the fantastic sounding workshops for older kids over the Easter hols. Book early!
